Background

Arjun was born in Warangal, in the state of Telangana, and began playing chess at a young age. He progressed through age-group events in India, gaining International Master and then Grandmaster norms while still in his teens. He earned the Grandmaster title in 2018, becoming one of the youngest Indians at the time to do so.

Career

Junior years

Arjun emerged from the strong junior chess circuit in India, competing in national and international youth championships. His progress was marked by steady gains in his FIDE rating and consistent performances in open tournaments in Europe and Asia.

Rise as a Grandmaster

After becoming a Grandmaster, Arjun established himself as a top open-tournament player, winning and finishing on the podium in several strong international events. He notably won the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid section, an event held annually in Kolkata, demonstrating his strength in faster time controls as well.

National and team events

Arjun has been part of Indian teams in major team competitions. He represented India at the Chess Olympiad, including the 44th Chess Olympiad held in Chennai in 2022, where the Indian teams achieved strong results. He has also featured in the FIDE Online Olympiad campaigns and other team competitions organised by FIDE and the AICF.

Elite circuit

Arjun has competed in events on the FIDE Grand Swiss and other elite circuits, and has been selected for top-level invitational tournaments as his rating climbed into the world's leading group. He has crossed the 2700 Elo rating mark, placing him among the small set of Indian players to reach the "super-grandmaster" level alongside players such as Viswanathan Anand, Pentala Harikrishna, Vidit Gujrathi, Dommaraju Gukesh and Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa.
