Background
Gukesh was born into a Telugu-speaking family settled in Chennai. He was introduced to chess at the age of seven and began competitive play soon after. Chennai, the home city of former world champion Viswanathan Anand, has long been a hub of Indian chess, and Gukesh trained at the Velammal school system, which has produced several Indian grandmasters. His primary coach for much of his career has been Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna. He later became one of the prominent young players associated with the Westbridge Anand Chess Academy (WACA), founded by Anand to mentor Indian talent.
Career
Early years
Gukesh earned the International Master title at a young age and became a Grandmaster in January 2019, at the age of 12 years and 7 months, making him at that time the second-youngest grandmaster in history. His early international exposure came through age-category events, where he won several Asian and World youth medals.
Rise on the international circuit
Between 2021 and 2023, Gukesh recorded a steady rise in the FIDE rating list. He notably finished as the top-scoring player on board one for India at the 44th Chess Olympiad held in Mahabalipuram, Chennai, in 2022, winning an individual gold medal and helping India to a team bronze. By 2023, he had crossed Anand in the live rating list, becoming the highest-rated Indian player for the first time since Anand's emergence at the top of Indian chess.
Candidates Tournament 2024
Gukesh won the FIDE Candidates Tournament held in Toronto, Canada, in April 2024. At 17, he became the youngest player ever to win the Candidates and earned the right to challenge the reigning world champion. The field included Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Praggnanandhaa R, Vidit Gujrathi, Alireza Firouzja and Nijat Abasov.
World Chess Championship 2024
The World Chess Championship match between Gukesh and Ding Liren was held in Singapore from 25 November to 12 December 2024. Gukesh won the match in the 14th and final classical game, finishing 7.5–6.5. At 18, he became the youngest undisputed world chess champion in history, surpassing the previous record held by Garry Kasparov, who was 22 when he won the title in 1985.
Olympiad 2024
At the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest in September 2024, Gukesh won individual gold on board one and contributed to India winning its first-ever team gold medal in the open section of the Chess Olympiad.
Playing style
Gukesh is known for a classical, positionally grounded style with strong calculation and exceptional stamina in long games. Commentators have noted his composure under pressure and his preparation depth, often associated with his work with WACA seconds and modern engine-based study.
