Before the establishment of SSUHS, medical and health science colleges in Assam were affiliated with general universities such as Gauhati University and Dibrugarh University. The creation of a dedicated health sciences university was part of a wider trend across Indian states to consolidate medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy and paramedical education under a single specialised affiliating authority. SSUHS was constituted by the Government of Assam to fulfil this role within the state.
The university affiliates a range of professional colleges and institutes in Assam offering programmes in:
SSUHS is responsible for prescribing curricula, conducting common examinations, awarding degrees and diplomas, and regulating academic standards in its affiliated institutions.
The university follows the standard governance structure of Indian state universities, with a Chancellor (the Governor of Assam), a Vice-Chancellor as the executive head, and statutory bodies such as the Court, the Executive Council, the Academic Council, and Faculty boards overseeing administration and academics.
By bringing the diverse health science streams of Assam under a single university, SSUHS has helped standardise curricula and examinations across affiliated institutions, supported the expansion of medical and nursing education in the state, and contributed to the regulation and quality assurance of health professional training in the North East region of India.
