Background

Dibrugarh University was constituted under the Dibrugarh University Act, 1965, enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly. It was set up to meet the long-felt need for a university in the upper Assam region, an area historically associated with the tea, oil and timber industries. The university functions as an affiliating university, with a network of constituent, affiliated and permitted colleges spread across upper Assam.

Campus

The main campus is at Rajabheta, a short distance from Dibrugarh town, set on a stretch of land along the Brahmaputra. The campus houses the postgraduate teaching departments, central library, administrative blocks, hostels and faculty residences.

Academic structure

The university offers postgraduate, doctoral and select undergraduate programmes through its teaching departments, organised under faculties such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering and Technology, and Education. It conducts examinations and awards degrees for affiliated colleges in disciplines ranging from the humanities and social sciences to the natural sciences, commerce, law and professional studies.

Apart from regular departments, the institution operates a Centre for Distance and Online Education that offers programmes for students unable to attend on-campus courses. Several specialised centres and institutes function within the university for area-specific research, including studies relating to tea, petroleum, and the languages and cultures of the north-east.

Governance

The university is headed by a Vice-Chancellor, with the Governor of Assam serving as the Chancellor in the customary manner of state universities in India. Statutory bodies such as the Court, the Executive Council, the Academic Council and the Finance Committee oversee its administration, in accordance with the provisions of the Dibrugarh University Act.

Significance

As the principal university of upper Assam, Dibrugarh University has played a notable role in expanding access to higher education in a region that lies far from the older university centres of Guwahati and Kolkata. It serves a large student population drawn from the districts of Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Golaghat, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji, as well as parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
