Background

The demand for a university in Assam predated Indian independence, and the institution was created soon after, providing the region with its first full-fledged university. The campus is situated on the western side of Guwahati, near the Brahmaputra river, in an area that has since developed as an educational hub housing several other institutions.

Gauhati University was founded through legislation of the Assam Legislative Assembly, the Gauhati University Act, which set out its constitution, governance, and powers as an affiliating and teaching body. The university is administered by statutory authorities such as the Court, the Executive Council, the Academic Council, and the Finance Committee, headed by a Vice-Chancellor.

Academics

The university offers programmes across the faculties of arts, science, commerce, law, engineering and technology, and management. Postgraduate teaching and doctoral research are conducted in departments organised under these faculties on the main campus, while undergraduate education is largely delivered through affiliated colleges spread across districts of Assam.

  • Postgraduate departments in humanities, social sciences, pure and applied sciences, and professional disciplines.
  • Doctoral and M.Phil. research programmes across most departments.
  • A network of affiliated and permitted colleges in Assam offering undergraduate courses.
  • Distance and open learning offered through the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL).

Campus

The main campus at Jalukbari, often referred to as Gopinath Bardoloi Nagar, contains academic departments, administrative offices, the central library (K. K. Handique Library), hostels for students, residential quarters, an auditorium, sports facilities, and a university press. The campus lies along National Highway 27 and is connected to central Guwahati by road and rail.

Significance

As the oldest university in the North East, Gauhati University has played a foundational role in the development of higher education, research, and academic publishing in Assam and neighbouring states. Several later universities in the region, including some that were carved out of its earlier jurisdiction, drew upon its academic and administrative experience. The university has also been associated with the development of Assamese language studies, regional history, and research on the natural resources and societies of the Brahmaputra valley.
