Background

Tezpur, situated on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, has historically served as an administrative and educational hub for upper Assam. The establishment of a medical college in the town was part of a broader policy by the Government of Assam to decentralise medical education, which had earlier been concentrated in a few institutions such as Gauhati Medical College, Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh, and Silchar Medical College. TMCH caters to patients from Sonitpur and neighbouring districts including Biswanath, Darrang, Lakhimpur and parts of Arunachal Pradesh.

Academics

The college conducts the undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme. Admissions are made through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) under the regulatory framework of the National Medical Commission. The institution is affiliated to the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, the apex health sciences university of Assam headquartered in Guwahati.

Hospital Services

The attached teaching hospital functions as a referral centre and provides services across major clinical departments, including general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, anaesthesiology, radiology and pathology. Pre-clinical and para-clinical departments such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, forensic medicine and community medicine support the academic programme.

Significance

TMCH plays a notable role in improving the doctor–population ratio in northern Assam and in reducing the patient load on older institutions in Guwahati and Dibrugarh. As a government teaching hospital, it provides subsidised tertiary care to a largely rural and semi-urban catchment area, and contributes to the training of medical professionals who serve in the wider North East region.
