Geography

Sonitpur lies between the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh to the north and the Brahmaputra to the south. The terrain is largely alluvial plain in the south, rising into forested hills along the northern boundary. Several tributaries of the Brahmaputra, including the Jia Bharali (Kameng) and the Buroi, flow through the district. The Jia Bharali, descending from the eastern Himalaya, is one of the most prominent rivers and supports the ecology of Nameri National Park.

Administration

The district is administered by a Deputy Commissioner and is divided into civil subdivisions and revenue circles, with Tezpur serving as the principal urban centre. Other towns and localities of administrative significance include Dhekiajuli, Rangapara, and Gohpur, the last of which was carved out along with adjoining areas to form the new Biswanath district in 2015, reducing Sonitpur's earlier extent.

History

The Tezpur area has a long recorded history, with archaeological remains such as the ruins at Da-Parbatia bearing some of the earliest sculptural art of Assam, dating to the Gupta-influenced period. In medieval times the region came under the influence of the Ahom kingdom, with frontier outposts maintained against incursions from the hills to the north.

Under British administration, the area became part of the Darrang district. Sonitpur was constituted as a separate district in 1983, when Darrang was reorganised. In 2015, the eastern portion of Sonitpur was further bifurcated to create Biswanath district, with Biswanath Chariali as its headquarters.

Economy

The economy is primarily agrarian. Tea cultivation is a major industry, with numerous tea estates established during the colonial period continuing to operate. Paddy is the principal food crop, supplemented by mustard, pulses, and horticultural produce. Tezpur is also known for its production of litchi, and the town hosts a Tezpur litchi that has received recognition as a geographical indication. Small-scale industries, trade, and services centred on Tezpur supplement the rural economy.

Education and institutions

Tezpur is home to Tezpur University, a central university established in 1994. The town also hosts Darrang College, one of the older colleges of the region, along with medical, technical, and general educational institutions serving the wider north bank.

Culture

Sonitpur has a long association with Assamese cultural life. Tezpur is the birthplace of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, dramatist, poet and pioneering Assamese filmmaker, and of Bishnu Prasad Rabha, the multifaceted artist and revolutionary. The town's Chitralekha Udyan and Agnigarh hill are associated with the local legends of Usha and Aniruddha. Bihu, Raas, and other Assamese festivals are widely observed across the district.

Wildlife and tourism

Sonitpur contains Nameri National Park, known for its tiger and elephant populations and as habitat of the white-winged wood duck. Adjoining reserve forests on the foothill belt form part of an important elephant corridor connecting Assam with Arunachal Pradesh. Tourist sites include Tezpur town with its archaeological remains and parks, the Jia Bharali river for angling and rafting, and the Bhalukpong gateway leading into Arunachal Pradesh.

Transport

The district is connected by National Highway 15 along the north bank corridor. Tezpur is served by the Salonibari Airport and by a railway link via the Rangapara junction on the Northeast Frontier Railway. The Kolia Bhomora Setu, a road bridge over the Brahmaputra near Tezpur, links Sonitpur with Nagaon district on the south bank.
