It functions as the apex body for horticultural education and research in Telangana, supporting farmers and the horticultural industry through teaching programmes, research stations, and extension outreach.

Academics and research

SKLTSHU offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in horticulture and allied subjects. The university operates through constituent colleges, research stations, and Krishi Vigyan Kendras spread across different agro-climatic zones of Telangana. Its research priorities include fruit crops, vegetables, plantation and spice crops, floriculture, medicinal and aromatic plants, post-harvest technology, and protected cultivation.

Extension activities

The university supports horticultural farmers through training programmes, demonstrations, and the dissemination of improved varieties and cultivation practices. It collaborates with the state Department of Horticulture and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) on technology transfer and capacity building.

Significance

As one of the few universities in India devoted exclusively to horticulture, SKLTSHU plays an important role in promoting commercial horticulture in Telangana, where crops such as mango, sweet orange, turmeric, chilli, and vegetables are economically significant. The university contributes to crop diversification and to raising the income of small and marginal farmers in the region.
