Background
Agricultural higher education in the Telugu-speaking region was historically organised under the Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU), which had been established in 1964 with its main campus at Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. Following the bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Andhra Pradesh and the formation of Telangana in June 2014, the assets, faculties and constituent colleges of ANGRAU lying within Telangana were reorganised into a new state agricultural university.
The reconstituted institution was named after Professor Kothapally Jayashankar (1934–2011), a long-standing ideologue of the Telangana statehood movement and a former Vice-Chancellor of Kakatiya University, in recognition of his contribution to the cause of a separate Telangana state.
Academics and structure
PJTSAU functions on the model recommended by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), integrating teaching, research and extension. Its mandate covers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral education in agriculture and allied sciences, along with crop research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) distributed across the agro-climatic zones of Telangana.
Programmes typically offered through its constituent and affiliated colleges include:
- B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture
- M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in agronomy, genetics and plant breeding, soil science, entomology, plant pathology, agricultural economics, extension and other disciplines
- Diploma programmes in agriculture and seed technology
The university administers a network of research stations focused on crops of regional importance such as rice, maize, cotton, pulses, oilseeds and millets, and supports extension activities for farmers through its Directorate of Extension and KVK system.
Campus
The main campus is at Rajendranagar, on the southern outskirts of Hyderabad, an area that is also home to several other agricultural and allied institutions including national-level research bodies. Constituent colleges and research stations are located in different districts of Telangana.
Significance
PJTSAU is the apex body for agricultural human resource development and crop research in Telangana. Its work on dryland farming, rice and millet improvement, and farm advisory services is closely tied to the agrarian economy of the state, where a significant share of the population depends on agriculture and allied activities.
