Career
Arjun Reddy (2017)
Arjun Reddy, starring Vijay Deverakonda and Shalini Pandey, was released on 25 August 2017. The film follows a brilliant but volatile surgeon who spirals into self-destruction after a failed relationship. Made on a modest budget, it became one of the biggest Telugu hits of the year, propelling Deverakonda to stardom and establishing Vanga as a distinctive new voice. The film was praised for its raw treatment and naturalistic performances, but also criticised for its portrayal of its protagonist's behaviour towards women.
Kabir Singh (2019)
Vanga directed the Hindi-language remake Kabir Singh, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani, released on 21 June 2019. Produced by Cine1 Studios and T-Series, the film was a major box-office success, crossing the ₹275 crore mark in India and ranking among the top-grossing Hindi films of 2019. Public discussion around the film, especially regarding gender depiction, became a prominent national debate, with Vanga publicly defending his creative choices in interviews.
Animal (2023)
Animal, released on 1 December 2023, was Vanga's third feature. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna and Tripti Dimri, the film is a violent father–son drama produced by T-Series Films and Bhadrakali Pictures, among others. It became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2023 and the highest-grossing film of Ranbir Kapoor's career to that point. Like his earlier work, it generated polarised critical responses while achieving wide commercial success. A sequel, tentatively titled Animal Park, has been announced.
Timeline
- 2017 – Directs Arjun Reddy, his debut Telugu feature.
- 2019 – Directs the Hindi remake Kabir Singh.
- 2023 – Directs Animal, a pan-Indian Hindi release.
Style and Themes
Vanga's films are characterised by intense male protagonists, long runtimes, prolonged emotional sequences, expressive sound design and a willingness to dwell on flawed or violent characters without overt moral framing. Recurring themes include obsessive love, alpha masculinity, family bonds (particularly father–son relationships), addiction and self-destruction. He typically writes, directs and edits his films, giving his work a recognisable authorial signature.
Reception and Debate
While Vanga's films have found large audiences, they have also drawn criticism from sections of the press and academic commentators for what they describe as the romanticisation of toxic masculinity and aggressive behaviour. Vanga has responded to such criticism in interviews, defending his characters as portraits rather than endorsements. The discourse around his films has become a notable case study in contemporary Indian debates over depiction versus endorsement in popular cinema.
Significance
Vanga is regarded as one of the few directors of his generation to have delivered consecutive blockbuster hits across both Telugu and Hindi cinema, contributing to the broader pan-Indian film trend of the late 2010s and early 2020s. Arjun Reddy and its remake helped reshape the template of the male-led romantic drama in Indian cinema, while Animal reinforced his reputation as a director able to combine star-driven scale with provocative storytelling.
