Career
Debut and early years (2007–2010)
Ranbir made his acting debut opposite Sonam Kapoor in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya (2007), an adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's White Nights. Although the film underperformed commercially, his performance earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. He followed it with Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008) and Rajkumar Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009). His role as a young, ambitious newcomer to Mumbai in Imtiaz Ali's Wake Up Sid (2009), and his performance as a small-town conman in Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year (2009), brought critical acclaim.
Establishment as a leading actor (2011–2016)
Ranbir's standing in the industry was consolidated by Anurag Basu's Barfi! (2012), in which he played a speech- and hearing-impaired man; the film was India's official entry to the Academy Awards that year. He also starred in Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar (2011) as a troubled musician, a role that won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Ayan Mukerji's Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), co-starring Deepika Padukone, became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of its time. Other notable releases in this period include Raajneeti (2010), Tamasha (2015), and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016).
Recent work (2018–present)
After a gap, Ranbir starred in Rajkumar Hirani's biographical drama Sanju (2018), portraying actor Sanjay Dutt; the film was a major commercial success. He next appeared in Shamshera (2022), Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022) directed by Ayan Mukerji, and Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal (2023), which became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films. He has also been associated with the upcoming mythological project Ramayana, in which he is reported to play Lord Rama.
Personal life
Ranbir married actress Alia Bhatt on 14 April 2022 in Mumbai. The couple's daughter, Raha Kapoor, was born in November 2022. He is a noted football enthusiast and is associated with the All Stars Football Club, a celebrity charity football team in India. He is also a co-owner of the Indian Super League franchise Mumbai City FC's earlier ventures and has held stakes in football initiatives in Mumbai.
