Background
The NIPER system was created to develop pharmaceutical sciences education and research in India. Following the establishment of the original NIPER at Mohali (Punjab) in 1998, the Government of India announced additional NIPERs at Ahmedabad, Hajipur, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Guwahati and Rae Bareli to expand pharmaceutical research capacity across the country.
NIPER Hyderabad operates with mentoring support from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research's Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR–IICT), located in Tarnaka, Hyderabad. The institute leverages Hyderabad's position as one of India's principal pharmaceutical and bulk drug manufacturing hubs.
Academic programmes
The institute offers postgraduate and doctoral programmes in pharmaceutical sciences. Areas of specialisation typically include:
- Medicinal Chemistry
- Pharmacology and Toxicology
- Pharmaceutics
- Pharmaceutical Analysis
- Process Chemistry
- Pharmacoinformatics / Regulatory Affairs
Admission to the master's programmes is conducted through the NIPER Joint Entrance Examination (NIPER JEE), which is common to all NIPER campuses.
Research and significance
NIPER Hyderabad contributes to drug discovery, formulation development, and pharmaceutical analysis, often in collaboration with the wider CSIR–IICT research ecosystem. Hyderabad's concentration of pharmaceutical companies, contract research organisations and bulk drug manufacturers in areas such as Genome Valley provides the institute with significant industry linkages for collaborative research and student training.
