Background
IICT traces its origins to the establishment of a chemical research laboratory in Hyderabad in the mid-twentieth century, which was later integrated into the CSIR network of laboratories. Over the decades, the institute's mandate has broadened from its early work in the chemistry of indigenous raw materials to encompass organic synthesis, catalysis, polymers, fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and chemical engineering.
The institute was originally known as the Regional Research Laboratory, Hyderabad. It was renamed the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology to reflect its expanded scope and focus on chemical technology development.
Research areas
IICT conducts research across several thematic divisions, including:
- Organic synthesis and natural products chemistry
- Catalysis and reaction engineering
- Medicinal chemistry and drug discovery
- Polymers and functional materials
- Fluoro and agrochemicals
- Process design and chemical engineering
- Analytical chemistry
- Centre for Semiochemicals and related areas of applied chemistry
Academic activities
The institute offers doctoral (PhD) and postdoctoral research opportunities in chemistry, chemical engineering, and allied areas. It is one of the constituent institutes of the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), through which it awards postgraduate and doctoral degrees. Researchers at IICT also collaborate with universities and industry partners in India and abroad.
Industrial collaboration and technology transfer
A defining characteristic of IICT is its emphasis on industrial relevance. The institute has developed and licensed processes for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), specialty chemicals, catalysts, and polymers to Indian and international companies. It works closely with the Indian pharmaceutical and fine chemicals industry, particularly the cluster centred around Hyderabad, and undertakes contract research, consultancy, and process development assignments.
Significance
IICT is regarded as one of the principal Indian centres for chemical research. It has contributed to indigenous capability in process chemistry, supported the growth of the country's pharmaceutical and chemical industries, and trained a substantial number of researchers who have moved into academia and industry. Its location in Hyderabad, a major hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and biotechnology, has reinforced its role in industry–academia interaction.
