Genome Valley

Overview

Genome Valley is a high-technology business district located on the outskirts of Hyderabad in the Indian state of Telangana. It is recognised as one of India's earliest organised life sciences clusters, hosting research and development facilities, manufacturing units, and incubation centres for companies engaged in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, diagnostics, and contract research.

Key facts

Type Biotechnology and life sciences cluster
Location Hyderabad metropolitan region, Telangana, India
Sector focus Biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, diagnostics, contract research
Promoted by Government of Telangana (earlier Government of Andhra Pradesh)

Geography

Genome Valley spans an area in and around the Shameerpet, Turkapally, and Karkapatla zones in the northern periphery of Hyderabad. The cluster is integrated with adjoining knowledge infrastructure such as the ICICI Knowledge Park and is connected to the city through the Outer Ring Road network.

Background

Genome Valley was conceived in the late 1990s as part of the undivided Andhra Pradesh government's strategy to position Hyderabad as a hub for knowledge-based industries, complementing the parallel development of the city as a centre for information technology. The cluster was designed to bring together academic research, industrial R&D, manufacturing, and regulatory testing facilities within a contiguous geography, supported by purpose-built infrastructure for biotechnology firms.

Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and the formation of Telangana in 2014, Genome Valley continued to be developed as a flagship initiative of the Telangana government's life sciences policy.

Tenants and activities

The cluster hosts a mix of Indian and multinational organisations operating across the life sciences value chain, including:

  • Vaccine manufacturers and biopharmaceutical companies.
  • Contract research and contract manufacturing organisations.
  • Diagnostics and medical devices firms.
  • Public sector and academic research institutions in the surrounding science corridor.

Activities undertaken at Genome Valley span discovery research, pre-clinical and clinical development support, bulk drug and formulation manufacturing, and vaccine production.

Significance

Genome Valley is regarded as one of the principal contributors to Hyderabad's reputation as a major centre of the Indian pharmaceutical and vaccine industry. Hyderabad-based units, including several located in or associated with Genome Valley, have played a notable role in global vaccine supply, particularly during large-scale immunisation programmes. The cluster is also frequently cited as a model in Indian state-level industrial policy for sector-specific knowledge parks.

BioAsia

Genome Valley is closely associated with BioAsia, an annual life sciences conference organised in Hyderabad by the Government of Telangana, which serves as a platform for industry, policy, and academic engagement around the cluster.
