Background

MIDHANI was set up to achieve self-reliance in the production of strategic materials that were earlier imported, particularly those required for defence platforms, missile systems, aircraft, naval applications and atomic energy installations. The company's product portfolio includes nickel- and cobalt-based superalloys, titanium and titanium alloys, special purpose steels, soft magnetic alloys and other advanced materials.

Operations and products

The company manufactures a wide range of materials in forms such as ingots, billets, bars, rods, sheets, plates, forgings and tubes. Its key application areas include:

  • Aerospace components for engines and airframes.
  • Materials for missile and rocket systems.
  • Armour and structural alloys for defence platforms.
  • Materials for nuclear power and atomic energy programmes.
  • Specialised alloys for the space programme.

MIDHANI works closely with Indian strategic organisations including the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the Department of Atomic Energy and various defence public sector enterprises.

Corporate status

MIDHANI is a listed public sector enterprise, having undertaken an initial public offering through which a portion of the Government of India's shareholding was divested while the government retained majority ownership. The company has been recognised as a Mini Ratna central public sector enterprise.

Significance

As one of the few integrated producers of superalloys and special metals in India, MIDHANI plays a strategic role in import substitution for high-end materials. Its outputs feed into national programmes such as indigenous fighter aircraft, missile systems, naval vessels, satellite launch vehicles and nuclear reactors, making it a critical link in India's defence and aerospace supply chain.
