Background

HAL traces its origins to Hindustan Aircraft Limited, established at Bangalore in December 1940 by the industrialist Walchand Hirachand in partnership with the princely state of Mysore. After Independence the firm came fully under the Government of India. In 1964, Hindustan Aircraft Limited was merged with Aeronautics India Limited (which had been set up to licence-produce the MiG-21) to form the present Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
