Background

Over subsequent decades, it expanded to produce a range of missile systems developed in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and with foreign technology partners.

BDL operates manufacturing facilities at multiple locations, including units at Kanchanbagh (Hyderabad), Bhanur (in the erstwhile Medak district of Telangana) and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, with the Visakhapatnam unit historically associated with underwater weapons such as torpedoes.

Products and capabilities

BDL's product portfolio has included surface-to-air missiles, anti-tank guided missiles, air-to-air missiles, underwater weapons and launchers, as well as countermeasure systems and test equipment. The company has been associated with the production of systems such as the Akash surface-to-air missile and various anti-tank guided missile variants for the Indian Army, in addition to undertaking refurbishment and life-extension of existing missile inventories.

Corporate developments

  • The company is recognised as one of the Indian defence PSUs entrusted with serial production of DRDO-developed missile systems.
  • BDL became a publicly listed entity following its initial public offering, with the Government of India retaining majority shareholding.
  • It has pursued export opportunities in line with the Government of India's policy of promoting defence exports.

Significance

As a dedicated missile manufacturer within India's defence industrial base, BDL plays a strategic role in equipping the armed forces and reducing reliance on imported guided weapon systems. Its production activities are closely linked to programmes of the DRDO and to procurement plans of the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy.
