Background
The university was set up following the enactment of the Central Universities Act, 2009, under which several new central universities were created across Indian states that did not previously have one. In the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, two central universities were sanctioned — one for the Jammu region and one for the Kashmir region — leading to the establishment of the Central University of Jammu and the Central University of Kashmir.
Campus
The permanent campus of the university is situated at Rahya-Suchani (Bagla) in Samba district, along the Jammu–Pathankot national highway, a short distance from Jammu city. The campus houses academic blocks, administrative offices, hostels, and residential facilities, and the institution has progressively expanded its infrastructure since beginning operations from a transit campus.
Academics
The university offers postgraduate, undergraduate, and doctoral programmes across several schools and departments covering disciplines such as humanities, languages, social sciences, basic sciences, mathematics, business studies, law, education, and information technology. Programmes are organised under thematic schools, with research and integrated courses also forming part of the academic structure.

Statutory bodies such as the Court, the Executive Council, the Academic Council, and the Finance Committee oversee policy, academic affairs, and administration.
