Background

The Central University of Kashmir was created alongside a group of new central universities sanctioned by the Government of India to widen access to higher education across states and union territories that did not previously have a central university. The institution was set up under the Central Universities Act, 2009, which simultaneously established several other central universities in different parts of the country.

In its initial years, the university operated from temporary transit campuses in Srinagar and adjoining areas while a permanent campus was developed at Tulmulla in Ganderbal district, on the banks of the Sindh stream. Academic departments have been progressively shifted to the permanent campus as construction has advanced.

Academic structure

The university is organised into schools that group related departments. Areas of study include:

  • Languages and literature, including English, Urdu and Kashmiri studies
  • Social sciences such as politics and governance, economics, sociology, and law
  • Education and teacher training
  • Management studies and tourism
  • Mathematics, computer sciences and information technology
  • Media studies, including journalism and convergent journalism
  • Islamic studies and comparative religious studies

Programmes are offered at the postgraduate (MA, MSc, MCom, MBA, MEd, LLM and similar) and doctoral (PhD, MPhil where applicable) levels, along with selected integrated and undergraduate courses. Admissions to most programmes are conducted through national-level entrance examinations notified by the National Testing Agency.

Campus

The permanent campus at Tulmulla in Ganderbal houses academic blocks, administrative offices, hostels, a central library and supporting facilities. The site lies a short distance from Srinagar and is accessible by road from the Kashmir Valley's main urban centres. The university also maintains a satellite presence in Srinagar for certain academic and administrative functions.

Governance

As a central university, CUK is governed in accordance with the Central Universities Act, 2009 and its statutes. The principal officers include the Visitor (the President of India), the Chancellor, and the Vice-Chancellor, who is the chief executive and academic officer. Statutory bodies such as the Court, the Executive Council, the Academic Council and the Finance Committee oversee policy, academic affairs and administration.

Significance

The Central University of Kashmir is one of the principal central institutions of higher learning in the Kashmir Valley, complementing established state universities such as the University of Kashmir. Its creation was part of a wider policy effort to expand publicly funded higher education and research opportunities in the region, particularly at the postgraduate and doctoral levels.
