Services

Avadi is primarily served by Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) suburban trains operating between Chennai Central / Chennai Beach and destinations such as Tiruvallur, Arakkonam and, on certain services, Tiruttani. A number of long-distance and passenger trains also halt at Avadi, given its catchment population.

  • Frequent EMU services towards Chennai Beach and Chennai Central in the eastbound direction.
  • EMU services towards Tiruvallur and Arakkonam in the westbound direction.
  • Selected mail/express and passenger trains halt at the station.

Infrastructure

The station has multiple platforms equipped to handle long-rake suburban services on the Chennai–Arakkonam quadruple-line corridor, which separates suburban traffic from long-distance traffic. Standard suburban facilities such as ticket counters, automatic ticket vending machines, foot overbridges, and waiting areas are available. The line through Avadi is fully electrified and forms part of one of the oldest electrified suburban routes in southern India.

Significance

As a key suburban node, Avadi handles a high volume of daily commuters travelling to central Chennai for work and education, as well as defence-sector employees commuting to nearby installations. Its position on the Chennai–Arakkonam line, which is part of the broader Chennai–Bengaluru and Chennai–Mumbai trunk routes, also gives it operational importance.
