Avadi

Avadi is a western suburb of Chennai and a municipal corporation located in the Tiruvallur district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Situated about 23 kilometres west of Chennai's central business district, Avadi is one of the most prominent industrial and defence-related townships in the Chennai Metropolitan Area, and is widely associated with the Heavy Vehicles Factory and other establishments of the Government of India.

Etymology

The name Avadi is popularly explained as an acronym for "Armoured Vehicles and Ammunition Depot of India," a reference to the defence establishments set up in the area in the mid-twentieth century. Linguistic and historical evidence, however, indicates that the place name predates these installations, and the acronym is generally regarded as a folk etymology.

Geography

Avadi lies on the Chennai–Arakkonam railway line and is connected to central Chennai by Poonamallee High Road and the Chennai Outer Ring Road. The terrain is largely flat, forming part of the coastal plain of northern Tamil Nadu. Neighbouring localities include Ambattur, Pattabiram, Thirumullaivoyal, Poonamallee and Tiruninravur.

Civic administration

Avadi was constituted as a municipality and was later upgraded to a municipal corporation by the Government of Tamil Nadu, becoming one of the larger urban local bodies in the Chennai Metropolitan Area. The corporation is responsible for civic services including water supply, sanitation, roads and local taxation. Policing in the town is handled by the Avadi City Police Commissionerate, a separate commissionerate distinct from the Greater Chennai Police.

Defence and industrial establishments

Avadi is best known as a centre for India's defence manufacturing. Major establishments located in and around the town include:

• Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF): A unit of the Ordnance Factory Board's successor structure, HVF manufactures main battle tanks for the Indian Army, including the Vijayanta, the T-72 Ajeya and the indigenous Arjun.
• Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE): A laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) engaged in the design and development of armoured fighting vehicles, including the Arjun tank programme.
• Engine Factory Avadi (EFA): Produces engines for armoured vehicles.
• Heavy Alloy Penetrator Project (HAPP): A defence facility producing armour-piercing ammunition components.

These installations make Avadi a strategically significant location and a major employer in the region.

History

Avadi grew from a small village into an industrial township after Indian independence, when the Government of India established defence production units in the area during the 1950s and 1960s. The Heavy Vehicles Factory began production of the Vijayanta tank in collaboration with Vickers of the United Kingdom, and Avadi subsequently became the principal site of Indian tank manufacture.

Avadi Resolution, 1955

Avadi is historically notable for the Avadi Session of the Indian National Congress held in January 1955, which adopted the resolution endorsing a "socialistic pattern of society" as the goal of economic policy. The resolution, moved during the presidency of U. N. Dhebar and supported by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, became a defining statement of Indian economic policy in the Nehru era and influenced subsequent Five-Year Plans.

Transport

Avadi railway station, on the Chennai Beach–Arakkonam suburban line of Southern Railway, is one of the busiest suburban stations in Chennai and serves a large daily commuter base. The town is also connected by Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus services to most parts of Chennai. The Chennai International Airport at Meenambakkam is approximately 25 kilometres to the south.
