The Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) is an Indian defence manufacturing facility located at Avadi, near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. It specialises in the production of armoured fighting vehicles, including main battle tanks, and is among the principal tank-building establishments in India. The factory functions within the country's state-owned defence production framework and supplies armoured vehicles primarily to the Indian Army.

Background
HVF was established as part of India's effort to develop indigenous capability for the manufacture of main battle tanks and other heavy armoured platforms. Located in Avadi, an industrial suburb of Chennai with a long association with India's defence sector, the factory forms part of a wider cluster of defence units in the area, including establishments concerned with engines, foundry work, research and development, and overhaul of armoured vehicles.
Products and activities
The factory's output is centred on tracked armoured fighting vehicles. It is widely associated with the production and assembly of variants of the Vijayanta, T-72 Ajeya, T-90 Bhishma and the indigenously developed Arjun main battle tank, along with associated armoured platforms such as bridge layers, recovery vehicles and engineering variants. Production typically involves hull fabrication, assembly, integration of subsystems, and final testing of complete vehicles before delivery to the user.
Organisational context
HVF was historically operated under the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), the umbrella body that managed India's network of ordnance factories under the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence. Following the corporatisation of the OFB in 2021, the ordnance factories were reorganised into a set of defence public sector undertakings, and HVF was placed under the armoured vehicle-focused entity formed during that restructuring.
Significance
As one of the few facilities in India capable of series production of main battle tanks, HVF plays a strategic role in equipping the armoured corps of the Indian Army and in supporting the country's broader self-reliance objectives in defence manufacturing. Its activities are closely linked with design and development organisations such as the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), also located at Avadi, which contributes to indigenous armoured vehicle programmes.
