Overview

The station is built underground beneath the busy Anand Vihar transport hub, one of the largest multi-modal nodes in the National Capital Region. It is among the few underground stations on the Delhi–Meerut RRTS corridor, the rest of which is largely elevated. The station has been planned with multiple entry and exit points to allow direct connectivity with the surrounding transport facilities.

Background

The Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut RRTS is a semi-high-speed rail corridor approximately 82 kilometres long, designed for a maximum operating speed in the range of 160 km/h. It is implemented by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), a joint venture of the Government of India and the state governments of Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The project aims to reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut to under an hour and ease congestion on existing road and rail links.

Anand Vihar was identified as a strategic stop because of its existing role as a gateway between Delhi and the trans-Hindon townships of Ghaziabad, including Kaushambi, Vaishali and Indirapuram.

Connectivity

  • Delhi Metro: Interchange with the Anand Vihar metro station served by the Blue Line and the Pink Line.
  • Indian Railways: Adjacent to Anand Vihar Terminal, a major originating station for trains to eastern India.
  • Bus transport: Connected to the Anand Vihar Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation, and the nearby Kaushambi ISBT operated by Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation.

Significance

The station is one of the busiest nodes on the RRTS corridor due to the volume of commuter and intercity traffic that converges at Anand Vihar. By integrating RRTS with the metro, mainline rail and bus systems, it functions as a multi-modal interchange supporting daily commuters between Delhi, Ghaziabad, Meerut and the wider NCR. Construction of the underground section beneath the active transport hub involved tunnelling and station-box works carried out alongside continuing operations of the surrounding facilities.
