Background

Neog hails from the Golaghat district of Assam, an area in the upper Brahmaputra valley historically associated with tea cultivation and a distinctive Assamese cultural milieu. She entered active politics through the Indian National Congress, which has long been one of the principal political forces in Assam alongside the Asom Gana Parishad and, more recently, the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Political career

Neog was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Golaghat constituency on multiple occasions as a Congress candidate. During the Congress-led governments in Assam headed by Tarun Gogoi, she served as a minister in the state cabinet, holding portfolios that included finance and social welfare-related departments at various points.

After a period within the Congress, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly election. She contested and won the Golaghat seat on a BJP ticket and was subsequently inducted into the state cabinet led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, taking charge of the finance portfolio, among others.

Significance

Neog's career reflects a wider realignment in Assam politics during the 2010s and early 2020s, in which several senior Congress legislators in the state shifted to the Bharatiya Janata Party. As a woman holding the finance portfolio in Assam, she has occupied a relatively rare position in the state's executive history, and has been a recurring figure in budget presentations and fiscal policy announcements of the state government.
