Overview
Himanta Biswa Sarma (born 1 February 1969) is an Indian politician and lawyer who is serving as the 15th Chief Minister of Assam. He assumed the office in 2021 and represents the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Sarma represents the Jalukbari constituency in the Assam Legislative Assembly. He has been elected to the Assembly six times, with his first election in 2001, and has continued to retain the seat in subsequent elections.
Earlier in his political career, Sarma was associated with the Indian National Congress. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 August 2015. Following his entry into the BJP, he was appointed convenor of the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), a coalition of political parties in north-eastern India.
