Puri Jagannadh hails from Andhra Pradesh and entered the film industry as an assistant and dialogue writer before transitioning to direction. His early work as a writer brought him recognition for sharp, punchy dialogue, a stylistic trait that later became a signature of his directorial work. He made his directorial debut in the late 1990s and quickly built a reputation for delivering commercial successes anchored in urban, street-smart protagonists.
Puri Jagannadh directed his first feature, Badri, starring Pawan Kalyan, which became a major commercial success in Telugu cinema and established him as a director with an ear for youth-oriented storytelling. He followed this with films featuring leading stars of the period, building an identity around hero-centric narratives.
Through the 2000s, Puri Jagannadh delivered a string of widely seen Telugu films, including Idiot with Ravi Teja, Amma Nanna O Tamil Ammayi, Pokiri with Mahesh Babu, and Desamuduru with Allu Arjun. Pokiri (2006) was a particularly significant landmark, becoming one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of its time and being remade in Hindi as Wanted (2009), starring Salman Khan.
Puri Jagannadh directed Bbuddah... Hoga Terra Baap (2011), starring Amitabh Bachchan, marking one of his direct ventures into Hindi-language filmmaking. He has also been associated with the Hindi remakes and adaptations of his Telugu works.
In subsequent years he directed films such as Businessman with Mahesh Babu, Temper with NTR Jr., and iSmart Shankar with Ram Pothineni. He launched the production house Puri Connects in partnership with Charmme Kaur, under which he produced and directed Liger (2022), a bilingual film starring Vijay Deverakonda released in multiple Indian languages and in Hindi.
Puri Jagannadh's films typically feature a streetwise male protagonist, rapid plotting, stylised confrontation scenes, and dialogue-heavy sequences. His writing often draws from urban slang and pulpy crime thriller conventions, and he frequently writes the screenplays and dialogues of the films he directs. Critics have noted both his ability to craft commercially potent mass entertainers and the formulaic tendencies in some of his later work.
Puri Jagannadh is regarded as one of the influential commercial filmmakers of Telugu cinema in the 2000s and 2010s. Pokiri in particular is cited as a benchmark mass film, and its pan-Indian footprint through the Hindi remake helped expand the visibility of Telugu commercial cinema beyond its home market. He has also played a role in shaping the screen personas of several leading male actors at key points in their careers.
His son Akash Puri is an actor in Telugu cinema, having appeared in films produced and directed under the family's banner. His daughter Pavithra Puri is also associated with the film industry.
