Background and early life

Mahesh Babu was born into the Ghattamaneni family, a prominent name in Telugu cinema. He is the youngest son of actor-producer Krishna and Indira Devi. His siblings include Ramesh Babu (also an actor) and sisters Padmavathi, Manjula, and Priyadarshini. Manjula Ghattamaneni is a producer and director.

He spent his early years in Chennai, where the Telugu film industry was then largely based, and later moved to Hyderabad. He studied at St. Bede's school in Chennai and went on to complete a degree in commerce from Loyola College, Chennai.

Career

Child artiste

Mahesh Babu first appeared on screen as a child artiste at the age of four in Needa (1979). Through the 1980s and early 1990s he played child roles in several Telugu films featuring his father, including Poratam, Shankharavam, Bazaar Rowdy, Mugguru Kodukulu, Gudachari 117, and Balachandrudu.

Lead actor

He made his debut as a lead actor in Raja Kumarudu (1999), directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, for which he received the Nandi Award for Best Male Debut and the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut – South. After early films such as Yuvaraju and Vamsi, his career gained momentum with Murari (2001) and Bobby (2002).

The action film Okkadu (2003), directed by Gunasekhar, was a major commercial success and is regarded as a turning point in his career. It established him as a leading star and was widely remade in other Indian languages.

Established stardom

Subsequent successes included Athadu (2005) and Pokiri (2006), both directed by Trivikram Srinivas and Puri Jagannadh respectively. Pokiri became one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of its time and was remade in Hindi as Wanted (2009). Following a setback with Sainikudu (2006) and Athidhi (2007), he returned to commercial success with Dookudu (2011), directed by Sreenu Vaitla.

His later notable films include Businessman (2012), Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu (2013), 1: Nenokkadine (2014), Srimanthudu (2015), Brahmotsavam (2016), Spyder (2017) directed by A. R. Murugadoss, Bharat Ane Nenu (2018) directed by Koratala Siva, Maharshi (2019) directed by Vamshi Paidipally, Sarileru Neekevvaru (2020) directed by Anil Ravipudi, and Sarkaru Vaari Paata (2022) directed by Parasuram.
