Veterinary education in the Telugu-speaking regions was historically conducted under composite agricultural universities. With the formation of the separate state of Telangana in 2014, several state institutions were reorganised on a territorial basis. The veterinary, animal sciences and fisheries faculties located in the new state, which had previously functioned under Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University based in Tirupati, were reconstituted as a separate university for Telangana.
The university was created by the Government of Telangana through state legislation to serve as the apex institution for veterinary, animal husbandry and fisheries education and research in the state. Its administrative headquarters and several core academic units are situated on the Rajendranagar campus, which is a long-established hub for agricultural and veterinary education in Hyderabad.
The university oversees constituent colleges and research stations distributed across Telangana. Its academic programmes typically include:
PVNRTVU undertakes research in livestock production, animal health, dairy and poultry sciences, and fisheries, alongside extension services for farmers, livestock owners and field veterinarians. Its mandate includes disease surveillance support, training of para-veterinary personnel, and demonstration of improved animal husbandry practices through Krishi Vigyan Kendras and field stations.
As the dedicated veterinary university for Telangana, PVNRTVU plays a central role in producing veterinary professionals for the state's animal husbandry and dairy sectors, supporting livelihoods that depend on cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, poultry and inland fisheries. Its location in Rajendranagar places it within a wider cluster of agricultural institutions, including the Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University and several national research bodies.
