Background
Veterinary education in Andhra Pradesh was historically conducted under the umbrella of Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU), which had been established in 1964 to consolidate agricultural and allied sciences. Demand for a dedicated institution focused on livestock, poultry and fisheries — sectors of major economic importance in the state — led to the bifurcation of veterinary and fishery education from ANGRAU.
Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University was constituted by an Act of the Andhra Pradesh state legislature, becoming a separate state university for animal sciences. It assumed control of the existing veterinary, dairy and fishery colleges that had previously functioned under ANGRAU.
Academic structure
The university operates through constituent faculties covering:
- Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry
- Dairy Technology
- Fishery Science
It offers undergraduate programmes such as the Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.), along with postgraduate (M.V.Sc., M.F.Sc., M.Tech. Dairy) and doctoral (Ph.D.) programmes across departments including animal nutrition, animal genetics and breeding, livestock production management, veterinary microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, surgery, gynaecology, public health, aquaculture and dairy chemistry.
Research and extension
SVVU conducts research on indigenous livestock breeds, animal disease diagnosis and control, poultry production, aquaculture, and dairy product technology. Extension activities include training programmes for farmers, animal health camps, and dissemination of improved breeding and feeding practices through Krishi Vigyan Kendras and dedicated extension units. The university maintains diagnostic and referral services through teaching veterinary clinical complexes attached to its colleges.
Significance
As one of the few dedicated veterinary universities in southern India, SVVU plays a central role in training veterinarians, fishery scientists and dairy technologists for Andhra Pradesh, a state with significant dairy, poultry, and inland and marine fisheries sectors. Its location at Tirupati places it within a region of considerable livestock activity and links it to the wider academic ecosystem around Sri Venkateswara University and the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences.
