Kazi Nazrul University is a state public university located in Asansol, Paschim Bardhaman district, in the Indian state of West Bengal. The university was established by the Government of West Bengal to expand higher education access in the western part of the state, particularly the industrial belt around Asansol and Durgapur. Before its creation, colleges in the region were affiliated to The University of Burdwan, which served a wide territorial jurisdiction. The new university was carved out to reduce that affiliating load and to focus academic development on the coal- and steel-producing districts of western Bengal.
The institution carries the name of Kazi Nazrul Islam in recognition of his cultural significance to Bengal and his personal links with Churulia and Asansol, his birthplace and early home respectively.
Kazi Nazrul University offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes across the faculties of arts, science, commerce, and professional studies. It functions both as a teaching university through its on-campus departments and as an affiliating university for several colleges in the surrounding region. Departments cover disciplines including Bengali, English, history, political science, economics, mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, management, and education, among others.
The main campus is situated in Asansol, in the Paschim Bardhaman district. The district itself was carved out of the larger erstwhile Bardhaman district in 2017, and the university is one of the principal higher-education institutions within its boundaries.
As one of the newer state universities in West Bengal, Kazi Nazrul University plays a regional role in higher education, particularly serving students from Asansol, Durgapur, and adjoining areas of the Damodar valley industrial region. By acting as the affiliating authority for local degree colleges, it has reshaped the academic map of western Bengal that was previously centred on Burdwan.
