Paschim Bardhaman (also written as Paschim Barddhaman or West Bardhaman) is a district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It came into existence on 7 April 2017 when the erstwhile Bardhaman district was bifurcated into two new districts, Purba Bardhaman (East) and Paschim Bardhaman (West). It is the only fully industrial and urban district of West Bengal, owing to its concentration of coal mining, steel production, and allied heavy industries.

Geography
Paschim Bardhaman lies in the western part of West Bengal, on the eastern fringe of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The terrain is undulating, with lateritic soil and rocky outcrops, contrasting sharply with the alluvial plains of neighbouring Purba Bardhaman. The district is bounded by Birbhum to the north, Purba Bardhaman to the east, Bankura to the south, and the state of Jharkhand to the west. The Damodar river flows along its southern boundary, while the Ajay forms part of the northern boundary; the Barakar joins the Damodar within the district.
Administration
The district headquarters is at Asansol, which is also the seat of the Asansol Municipal Corporation, the second-largest municipal corporation in West Bengal after Kolkata. The district comprises two subdivisions:
- Asansol Sadar – with blocks including Salanpur, Barabani, Jamuria, Raniganj and Kulti.
- Durgapur – with blocks including Durgapur–Faridpur, Kanksa, Pandabeswar and Andal.
The two principal urban bodies are the Asansol Municipal Corporation and the Durgapur Municipal Corporation.
Economy
Paschim Bardhaman is the industrial heartland of West Bengal. The Raniganj Coalfield, one of the oldest coalfields in India where commercial mining began in the late eighteenth century, lies within the district and is operated largely by Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited.
Durgapur, planned in the 1950s and 1960s as a steel township, hosts major public sector undertakings including the Durgapur Steel Plant of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), the Alloy Steels Plant, and the Durgapur Projects Limited (DPL) thermal power station. The IISCO Steel Plant at Burnpur, also under SAIL, is another major industrial unit. The district additionally hosts engineering, cement, chemical, and refractory industries.
Demography and culture
The population is largely urban, with Asansol and Durgapur together forming one of the largest urban agglomerations in eastern India. Bengali is the principal language, with significant numbers of Hindi, Urdu, Santali and Bhojpuri speakers reflecting the migration linked to mining and industrial labour. The district has a notable Adivasi presence, particularly Santhal and Bauri communities, in its rural blocks.
Education and institutions
The district is home to several institutions of higher learning, including the National Institute of Technology Durgapur (NIT Durgapur), Kazi Nazrul University at Asansol, the Indian Institute of Information Technology Kalyani's earlier links to the region's technical ecosystem, and various medical and engineering colleges. Kazi Nazrul University is named after the poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, who was born at Churulia in present-day Paschim Bardhaman.
Transport
The district is served by the Howrah–Delhi main line of Indian Railways, with major stations at Asansol Junction and Durgapur. Asansol is one of the principal railway divisions of the Eastern Railway zone. National Highway 19 (the Grand Trunk Road corridor) passes through the district, linking it with Kolkata to the east and Dhanbad and beyond to the west. Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport at Andal serves the region for civil aviation.
Significance
Paschim Bardhaman is significant as a coal and steel hub that has historically powered industrial growth in eastern India. The Raniganj field's mining heritage, the planned township of Durgapur, and the Burnpur steel works together represent landmarks in India's industrial history from the colonial era through the Five-Year Plan period.
