The main campus, often referred to as Rajbati campus, is housed in and around the historic palace complex of the former Maharajas of Burdwan, lending the institution a distinctive heritage character. The university is funded by the Government of West Bengal and is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Academic structure

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes through faculties covering arts, science, commerce, engineering and technology, law, education, and management. Teaching and research are organised through departments on the main campus, while a large number of affiliated colleges across districts such as Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, Birbhum, Hooghly, and Bankura conduct undergraduate courses under its academic regulations.

Campuses

  • Rajbati campus — the historic core of the university, housing administrative offices and several humanities and social science departments.
  • Golapbag campus — the principal academic campus for science, technology, and several professional departments.

Research and libraries

The university maintains a central library along with departmental libraries supporting teaching and research. Research activity spans the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and applied disciplines, with doctoral programmes coordinated through the relevant faculties.

Significance

As the principal state university serving the Bardhaman region, the institution plays an important role in providing accessible higher education to students from semi-urban and rural areas of western West Bengal. Its setting within the former Burdwan Raj estate also makes the campus a notable element of the town's cultural and architectural landscape.
