KIIT was founded by Achyuta Samanta in 1992 and was conferred the status of a deemed-to-be university by the University Grants Commission in 2004. Over the years, the institution diversified beyond its initial focus on engineering and technology to encompass disciplines in management, law, medicine, humanities and the arts. The KIIT School of Languages was established within this broader framework as part of the university's expansion into humanities and liberal studies.
The school provides instruction in language studies and allied areas. Its academic activity typically includes coursework in English and other modern languages, research in literary studies, and components on communication and linguistics that support students drawn from across the wider university. The school also contributes language and communication-skills modules to programmes offered by other constituent schools of KIIT.
KSOL operates from the KIIT campus in Bhubaneswar, which is spread across multiple precincts in the city and shared with other schools of the deemed university. The campus is integrated with the broader academic, residential and library facilities maintained by KIIT.
As one of the dedicated humanities-oriented units within a primarily technology- and management-driven university, the School of Languages contributes to the institutional aim of providing multidisciplinary education. It supports the linguistic and communicative training of students enrolled in professional courses while sustaining independent academic work in languages and literature.
