Overview
The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, commonly known as KIIT, is a deemed-to-be university located in Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha, India. Founded in 1992 by Achyuta Samanta, the institution began as an industrial training centre and grew into a multi-disciplinary university offering programmes in engineering, management, law, medicine, biotechnology, computer applications, fashion technology, rural management, and the humanities.

Background
KIIT was started by Achyuta Samanta in 1992 as a small vocational training institute. Over the following decade it expanded into degree-level technical education, with the engineering school being among the earliest formal programmes. In 2004, the Government of India, on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC), conferred deemed-to-be university status on the institution under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. This allowed KIIT to design its own curriculum, conduct examinations, and award degrees.
The university is closely associated with the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), a residential institution founded by the same individual that provides education to children from tribal communities in Odisha.
