Background
KISS was founded by Achyuta Samanta, an academic and social worker who also established the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar. The institute was set up with the objective of addressing educational deprivation among tribal communities in Odisha, a state with one of the largest concentrations of Scheduled Tribe populations in India. It began with a small number of tribal students and expanded over the following decades into one of the largest free residential institutions of its kind.
The institute caters primarily to students drawn from the various Scheduled Tribes of Odisha, including communities classified as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). Education at KISS is fully residential, with the institute providing food, lodging, books, uniforms and medical care alongside formal academics.
Academic structure
Following its recognition as a Deemed to be University in 2017, KISS offers programmes spanning school education, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies. Subject areas include the social sciences, humanities, education, biodiversity and tribal studies, with research centres focused on indigenous knowledge systems, anthropology and rural development. The institute also runs vocational and skills-training programmes for older students.

Activities and recognition
Beyond formal education, KISS is known for its programmes in sports, the arts and tribal cultural preservation. Students from the institute have represented India in international youth sporting events, particularly in rugby and football. The institute organises cultural festivals showcasing tribal traditions and has hosted academic conferences on indigenous issues.
KISS has received attention from national and international agencies engaged in education and development, and its founder Achyuta Samanta has been recognised through various awards for the institute's work in tribal education.
Significance
KISS is widely cited as a large-scale model of residential tribal education in India. By combining free schooling with residential support and higher education access through its Deemed University status, the institute serves as a pathway from primary education to post-graduation for first-generation learners from tribal communities, many of whom would otherwise have limited access to formal schooling.
