The television adaptation was developed by producer Asit Kumarr Modi under his banner Neela Film Productions Pvt. Ltd. Jethalal is depicted as a middle-aged Gujarati businessman belonging to a Kutchi family settled in Mumbai.
Jethalal owns and runs Gada Electronics, a shop selling television sets and home appliances, located in Mumbai. His regular employees in the show include the accountant Natwarlal Prabhashankar Undhaiwala (popularly called Nattu Kaka) and the assistant Bagheshwar Dadukh Bapuji Aatmaram Trivedi (Bagha).
Jethalal is portrayed as good-humoured, emotional and frequently caught between his strict father and his lively wife. His comic exchanges with Champaklal, his unrequited admiration for the character Babita Iyer, his rivalry-friendship with Krishnan Iyer, and his dependence on Taarak Mehta for advice form recurring narrative arcs. Catchphrases associated with the character, including expressions of distress directed at his father and his wife, have become widely recognised in Indian popular culture.
Jethalal is widely regarded as the breakout character of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, one of the longest-running sitcoms in Indian television history. Dilip Joshi's portrayal has earned him several honours, including the Indian Television Academy Award for Best Actor in a Comic Role. The character has been frequently cited in news features and social media commentary as a representation of the small-business Gujarati middle class in Mumbai.
References to Jethalal are common in Indian internet meme culture, with screenshots and dialogues from the show used widely on platforms such as WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. Brands and political campaigns have at times referenced the character due to its broad recognisability across age groups.
