Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (often abbreviated as TMKOC) is an Indian Hindi-language sitcom that began airing on Sony SAB on 28 July 2008. Produced by Neela Tele Films Private Limited under the supervision of Asit Kumarr Modi, the show is loosely based on the long-running humour column Duniya Ne Undha Chasma, written by Gujarati writer Taarak Mehta for the weekly magazine Chitralekha. It is one of the longest-running Indian television sitcoms and has become a fixture of family prime-time viewing on Indian television.

Background
The series draws inspiration from Taarak Mehta's satirical column in Chitralekha, a Gujarati-language magazine. Asit Kumarr Modi acquired the rights to adapt the column for television and developed it as a daily situation comedy revolving around the residents of a fictional Mumbai housing society. The adaptation expanded the column's social commentary into an ensemble narrative format, with the character of Taarak Mehta himself appearing as one of the residents, played originally by Shailesh Lodha.

The show is set in Gokuldham Co-operative Housing Society, a fictional middle-class residential complex in Goregaon, Mumbai. Cast Changes
Over its long run, the series has seen multiple cast replacements. Notable transitions include the role of Tapu being played successively by different actors as earlier performers aged out of the role, and changes in the actors portraying Sonu Bhide, Roshan Sodhi and other supporting characters. Disha Vakani, who played Daya Gada, went on an extended break from the show after 2017. Shailesh Lodha, who portrayed Taarak Mehta, exited the series in 2022.

The series and its principal cast members have received nominations and awards at the Indian Television Academy Awards, Indian Telly Awards and other industry ceremonies, particularly in comedy categories. Dilip Joshi has been widely recognised for his portrayal of Jethalal.
