Overview

Dilip Joshi is an Indian film and television actor, widely recognised for his portrayal of Jethalal Champaklal Gada in the long-running Hindi sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, which began airing on Sony SAB in July 2008. With a career spanning since the late 1980s, Joshi has worked in Hindi and Gujarati cinema, theatre, and television, and is regarded as one of the most familiar comic actors on Indian television.

Background

Born in Porbandar in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, Joshi was raised in Mumbai, where his family had settled. He completed his schooling in the city and graduated in commerce from Mithibai College, Vile Parle. During his college years he was active in inter-collegiate theatre competitions, which drew him toward a career in acting. He performed in Gujarati stage productions before moving to films and television.

Career

Early film work

Joshi made his Hindi film debut with a brief appearance in Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya and produced by Rajshri Productions. He subsequently appeared in supporting and comic roles in films such as Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Khiladi 420 (2000), Yes Boss (1997), One 2 Ka 4 (2001), Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000), and Humraaz (2002), among others. He also acted in several Gujarati films and continued to perform in Gujarati theatre.

Television

Before his current role, Joshi was seen in television serials including Hum Sab Ek Hain, Kabhi Yeh Kabhi Woh, Daal Mein Kala, and Shubh Mangal Savadhan. His breakthrough as a household name came with the role of Jethalal Champaklal Gada, a Gujarati shop owner in the fictional Gokuldham Co-operative Housing Society, in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. The show, produced by Neela Tele Films and based on the column Duniya Ne Undha Chashma by Taarak Mehta in the Gujarati weekly Chitralekha, premiered on 28 July 2008 and has since become one of the longest-running sitcoms in Indian television history.
