The university was established by the Government of Madhya Pradesh through a state legislative act, granting it the status of a self-financed private university with the power to confer degrees. It is part of a wider network of educational institutions promoted by the Jaypee Group, which includes the Jaypee Institute of Information Technology in Noida, Jaypee University of Information Technology in Waknaghat (Himachal Pradesh) and Jaypee Institute of Engineering and Technology.
The campus is situated on the Guna–A.B. Road, in the Bundelkhand–Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, away from the major metropolitan centres but accessible by rail and road links to Bhopal, Gwalior and Indore.
JUET organises its teaching across departments that typically include:
The institution awards Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.), Master of Technology (M.Tech.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees, with admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes generally being made on the basis of national-level entrance examination scores.
The residential campus houses academic blocks, laboratories, a central library, hostels for men and women, faculty accommodation and sporting facilities. As a fully residential university, it follows a structure similar to other Jaypee Group institutions where students and faculty live on campus.
JUET is among the recognised private technical universities in Madhya Pradesh and contributes to higher technical education in a region that historically had limited access to specialised engineering institutes. Along with its sister institutions, it forms part of the private-sector expansion of technical education in north and central India during the 2000s.
