Background

The group grew out of a civil engineering and contracting business established by Jaiprakash Gaur, which initially focused on hydropower and large dam construction projects in India. Over time, the contracting business was consolidated under Jaiprakash Associates Limited, which became the flagship listed entity of the group. Building on its expertise in heavy construction, the group diversified into related and unrelated businesses, becoming one of India's larger private sector contractors of hydroelectric and river valley projects.

Engineering and construction

The group has been associated with the construction of several major hydroelectric and river valley projects in India, including works at Tehri, Sardar Sarovar, Baglihar, Indira Sagar, and various projects in the Himalayan region. Its construction business has long been a core revenue stream and a foundation for diversification.

Cement

Jaypee built up substantial cement manufacturing capacity, with plants concentrated in central, northern, and southern India. In the 2010s, the group divested significant portions of its cement business to UltraTech Cement as part of a process of debt reduction.

Power

Through Jaiprakash Power Ventures, the group operates hydroelectric stations in Himachal Pradesh and thermal power capacity in Madhya Pradesh, contributing to its presence in the Indian electricity sector.

Expressways and real estate

Jaypee Infratech developed the Yamuna Expressway, a six-lane access-controlled expressway connecting Greater Noida with Agra in Uttar Pradesh. The concession included rights to develop real estate along the corridor, leading to township projects such as Jaypee Greens and Jaypee Wish Town in the Noida–Greater Noida region. The real estate business subsequently became the subject of insolvency proceedings under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, with attendant litigation involving home buyers and lenders.

Hospitality

The group operates the Jaypee Hotels chain, with properties in Delhi, Agra, Mussoorie, and Noida, catering to business and leisure segments.

Sports

Jaypee Sports International developed the Buddh International Circuit at Greater Noida, which hosted the Indian Grand Prix Formula One race from 2011 to 2013. The group has also been associated with cricket and other sporting events in India.

Education

The group's educational initiatives are managed through the Jaypee Education System, which includes the Jaypee Institute of Information Technology at Noida, Jaypee University of Engineering and Technology at Guna (Madhya Pradesh), Jaypee University of Information Technology at Waknaghat (Himachal Pradesh), and Jaypee University at Anoopshahr.

Significance

The Jaypee Group is significant in Indian industry for the breadth of its diversification from a base in civil construction, and for its role in flagship infrastructure projects such as the Yamuna Expressway and the Buddh International Circuit.
