The district shares boundaries with neighbouring districts of Madhya Pradesh, including Ashoknagar, Shivpuri and Rajgarh, and is close to the border with Rajasthan.
Administration
The district is administered by a District Magistrate and Collector, with the Superintendent of Police heading the district police. For revenue and development purposes, the district is divided into sub-divisions, tehsils and development blocks, with Guna town functioning as the principal urban and administrative centre. Until the creation of Ashoknagar district in 2003, the area now forming Ashoknagar district was part of Guna district.
Economy and connectivity
The economy of Guna district is predominantly agrarian, with crops such as soybean, wheat, gram and oilseeds being widely cultivated. The district also has industrial activity around Guna town, including a long-established petrochemical and explosives manufacturing presence. Guna lies on the Western Central Railway corridor and on national highways linking Bhopal, Gwalior and Kota, which has made it an important transit point in the region.
Demographics and culture
The population of Guna district is largely Hindi-speaking, with Malvi and Bundeli dialects also spoken in different pockets. The district has communities of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, including Sahariya tribal groups in some areas. Local culture reflects a mix of Malwa and Bundelkhand traditions, including festivals, fairs and folk music.
History
Historically, the area of present-day Guna district lay within the territories controlled by the Scindia rulers of Gwalior during the 18th and 19th centuries, and earlier formed part of the Malwa Subah under the Mughal empire. After Indian independence in 1947, the region became part of the state of Madhya Bharat, and following the reorganisation of states in 1956 it was incorporated into Madhya Pradesh. The bifurcation of the district in 2003 led to the creation of the separate Ashoknagar district.
Significance
Guna district is significant as a regional centre for trade, education and administration in northern Madhya Pradesh. Its location at the junction of major road and rail routes gives it strategic importance for commerce between the Malwa, Chambal and Bundelkhand regions.
