Shah comes from Saurashtra in the state of Gujarat, a region whose cricketing affairs are administered by the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA), based in Rajkot. He developed through the SCA's age-group structures before moving into senior domestic cricket.
Shah has played in the Ranji Trophy, the premier first-class competition in India, as well as in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (List A) and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (Twenty20). He has been a regular middle-order batsman for Saurashtra and led the side as captain across multiple seasons, during a period in which Saurashtra developed into one of the more competitive teams in the Ranji Trophy and reached the latter stages of the tournament on several occasions.
As a senior batsman, Shah was part of Saurashtra squads that featured players such as Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja and Sheldon Jackson, contributing experience and stability to the batting order.
Shah's career is closely linked to the rise of Saurashtra as a competitive force in Indian domestic cricket. His tenure as captain coincided with Saurashtra's transition from a traditionally mid-table team to one regularly contending in the knockout stages of the Ranji Trophy.
