Background
The Saurashtra Cricket Association traces its origins to the early decades of organised cricket in western India. The team was historically known as Western India and Kathiawar in the early years of the Ranji Trophy, before adopting the name Saurashtra. It draws players from districts across the Kathiawar peninsula, including Rajkot, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Bhavnagar, Porbandar and Amreli.
For much of its early history, Saurashtra was regarded as a modest side in Indian domestic cricket, often grouped with the smaller state associations. The team's profile rose substantially from the 2000s onwards, coinciding with improved infrastructure in Rajkot and the emergence of nationally recognised players from the region.
Home grounds
The team played its home matches for many years at the Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Ground (also known as the Municipal Stadium) in central Rajkot. With the construction of the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium at Khandheri, completed in the early 2010s, the SCA shifted most of its first-class and limited-overs fixtures to the new venue. The Khandheri stadium has also hosted international matches across all three formats.
History and notable achievements
Ranji Trophy
Saurashtra reached its first Ranji Trophy final in the 2012–13 season, losing to Mumbai. The side reached the final again in 2015–16, losing to Mumbai once more, and in 2018–19, when it was beaten by Vidarbha. The team won its maiden Ranji Trophy title in 2019–20, defeating Bengal in the final played at Rajkot. It claimed a second Ranji Trophy crown in 2022–23, defeating Bengal in the final at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
Limited-overs cricket
Saurashtra won the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India's premier List A tournament, in the 2007–08 season. The team has also been a regular participant in the knockout stages of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India's domestic Twenty20 competition.
Notable players
Several India international cricketers have represented Saurashtra in domestic cricket, including:
- Cheteshwar Pujara – long-serving Test batter and captain of the side during its title-winning campaigns.
- Ravindra Jadeja – all-rounder and India international, central to Saurashtra's recent successes.
- Jaydev Unadkat – left-arm pace bowler and captain during the 2019–20 and 2022–23 Ranji-winning seasons.
- Karsan Ghavri – former India left-arm seamer who began his domestic career with Saurashtra.
- Sheldon Jackson – wicketkeeper-batter and prolific run-scorer in domestic cricket.
Significance
Saurashtra's rise from a peripheral side to a multiple Ranji Trophy champion is regarded as one of the more notable transformations in modern Indian domestic cricket. The team's success has been credited to a stable core of locally produced players, continuity in captaincy and coaching, and investment in facilities by the Saurashtra Cricket Association. The presence of nationally prominent players such as Pujara, Jadeja and Unadkat has also reinforced Rajkot's standing as a significant centre for Indian cricket.
