Geography

The district lies in the southwestern plains of Haryana, with a largely flat terrain that gives way to sandy tracts and low Aravalli outliers in the south. The climate is semi-arid, with hot summers, cool winters, and limited monsoon rainfall. Agriculture in the district depends substantially on canal irrigation drawn from systems linked to the Bhakra network, alongside groundwater.

Administration

The district is administered by a Deputy Commissioner and is divided into several tehsils and sub-tehsils for revenue purposes, with community development blocks for rural administration. Bhiwani town serves as the seat of the district administration, the district court complex, and the principal civic body.

History

Bhiwani was carved out as a separate district of Haryana in 1972, having earlier formed part of the larger Hisar district. In 2010, the new district of Charkhi Dadri was announced after being separated from Bhiwani, reducing its territorial extent. The town of Bhiwani itself has a long history as a trading centre on caravan routes between the Indo-Gangetic plains and Rajasthan, and grew in prominence during the colonial period as a market for cotton and grain.

Economy

The economy of the district is predominantly agrarian, with wheat, mustard, bajra (pearl millet), cotton, and gram among the principal crops. Bhiwani town developed as a centre of the textile industry in the twentieth century, with mills such as the Technological Institute of Textile and Sciences (TIT) campus reflecting this heritage. Trade, small-scale manufacturing, and government services contribute significantly to urban employment.

Education and culture

The district hosts the Chaudhary Bansi Lal University in Bhiwani, named after the former Chief Minister of Haryana Bansi Lal, who hailed from the region and played a defining role in its modern political history. The Technological Institute of Textile and Sciences and several long-established schools and colleges have contributed to the town's reputation as an educational hub in southern Haryana.

Bhiwani is widely associated with the sport of boxing in India and has been called a "boxing nursery" because of the number of national and international boxers trained at local academies, including Olympians from the town and surrounding villages.

Demographics

The population of the district is overwhelmingly Hindi-speaking, with Haryanvi as the principal spoken dialect. Hindus form the large majority, with smaller communities of Muslims, Sikhs, and Jains, the latter historically prominent among the merchant families of Bhiwani town. The district is predominantly rural, though Bhiwani town and a few smaller towns account for the bulk of the urban population.

Transport

Bhiwani is connected by state and national highways to Rohtak, Hisar, Rewari, and Delhi. The Bhiwani Junction railway station links the district to the broader Indian Railways network, with services towards Rewari, Hisar, and Rohtak.
