Geography
Rohtak is situated on the flat alluvial plains of the Ghaggar–Yamuna doab in southern Haryana. The terrain is largely level and agricultural, characteristic of the broader plains of north-western India. The city falls within the catchment of seasonal drains and is connected to the Western Yamuna Canal system, which supports irrigation in the surrounding district.
History
Rohtak has a long settlement history, with archaeological remains in the surrounding area indicating habitation from ancient periods. Mounds such as those at Khokhrakot have yielded artefacts associated with early historic and medieval periods. Through successive centuries the region passed under various powers, including the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughal Empire, and later British India, when Rohtak became the seat of a district in the Punjab Province.
After the formation of Haryana as a separate state on 1 November 1966, Rohtak emerged as one of its principal urban centres and a hub of political activity in the new state.
Administration
Rohtak is the headquarters of Rohtak district and of the Rohtak division. Civic administration in the urban area is handled by the Municipal Corporation of Rohtak. The city is represented in the Haryana Legislative Assembly through the Rohtak constituency and is part of the Rohtak Lok Sabha constituency.
Economy
The economy of Rohtak combines agriculture, agro-based industries, trade, and a growing services sector. The district is known for the cultivation of wheat, mustard, sugarcane, and cotton, and the city functions as a market town for surrounding rural areas. Industrial activity includes textile units, engineering, food processing, and manufacturing clusters in the periphery. The Asian Development Bank–supported and state-led industrial growth in the NCR has further integrated Rohtak into the regional economy of Delhi.

Rohtak is one of the leading educational centres of Haryana. Major institutions located in or near the city include:
- Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), a state university established in 1976.

Rohtak is well connected by road and rail. National Highway 9 (formerly NH-10) passes through the city, linking it with Delhi to the east and Hisar and Fazilka to the west. The city is also a junction on the Northern Railway network, with services to Delhi, Bathinda, Bhiwani, Panipat, and other destinations. The Delhi–Rohtak section is served by suburban and express trains, and the area is included in regional rapid transit and elevated railway projects associated with the NCR.
Culture and notable features
Rohtak is sometimes referred to as the "Heart of Haryana" due to its central location within the state and its political prominence. The city hosts cultural fairs, traditional Haryanvi music and dance, and is associated with a strong wrestling (kushti) tradition, with several akharas producing wrestlers who have represented India at national and international levels. Landmarks include the Tilyar Lake and the associated tourist complex maintained by Haryana Tourism, the Asthal Bohar math, and the Rohtak fort area.
Significance
Rohtak's significance lies in its combination of political weight in Haryana, its concentration of higher-education and medical institutions, its proximity to Delhi within the NCR, and its role as a service centre for a large agrarian hinterland.
