Background

The town of Charkhi Dadri has historically been a market and administrative centre in southern Haryana. Before independence, the area was associated with the princely state of Dadri, which was later integrated into the Indian Union and subsequently became part of the Punjab state. With the reorganisation of Punjab in 1966, the area was placed under Haryana, and was administered as a tehsil of Bhiwani district for several decades.

Demands for a separate district status, based on administrative convenience and the distance of several tehsils from the Bhiwani headquarters, were raised over a long period. The Haryana government accepted the proposal and notified the creation of Charkhi Dadri as a separate district, with formal operations beginning in 2016–2017.

Geography

The district lies in the semi-arid belt of southern Haryana, bordering Rajasthan in some sections. The terrain is largely plain with patches of rocky outcrops associated with the northern fringes of the Aravalli range. Agriculture and animal husbandry form the backbone of the rural economy, with bajra (pearl millet), mustard and wheat among the principal crops.

Administration

The district is headed by a Deputy Commissioner and a Superintendent of Police, in line with the standard administrative structure of Haryana districts. It is divided into tehsils and sub-tehsils, with Charkhi Dadri serving as the principal urban centre and seat of district-level offices. Badhra is another notable town and administrative subdivision within the district.

Demographics and society

The population of the district is predominantly rural and largely Hindi-speaking, with Haryanvi widely used in everyday communication. The Jat community has a significant presence in the district, alongside other communities traditional to the region. The district is well known for its strong tradition in wrestling and athletics, having produced sportspersons of national repute.
