Ashoknagar is situated on the transitional zone between the Malwa plateau and the Bundelkhand region. The terrain is largely undulating with black cotton soils that support extensive cultivation of soybean during the kharif season and wheat and gram during rabi. The district is drained by tributaries of the Betwa and Sindh river systems.
The city is administered by a municipal council under the framework of the Madhya Pradesh Municipalities Act. Ashoknagar district comprises tehsils including Ashoknagar, Chanderi, Mungaoli, Isagarh and Shadora. The district was constituted on 15 August 2003 by separating it from Guna district to improve administrative reach.
The town developed around a railway settlement on the line linking Bina and Guna, and grew during the twentieth century as a market town. The wider region has historical associations with the Scindia rulers of Gwalior State, under whose dominion several parts of the present district lay during the colonial period. Nearby Chanderi, a town within the district, has a much older heritage going back to the medieval period and is well known for its handwoven sarees and forts associated with the Bundelas, the Malwa Sultanate and the Mughals.
Ashoknagar is served by Ashoknagar railway station on the Bina–Guna section of the West Central Railway, providing connectivity towards Bhopal, Gwalior, Indore and other regional centres. State highways link the city with Guna, Shivpuri, Sagar and Chanderi.
The local economy is predominantly agrarian. Ashoknagar hosts a krishi upaj mandi (agricultural produce market) which handles substantial quantities of soybean, wheat, mustard and pulses. Allied activities include oil milling, dal processing and trade in agricultural inputs. Handloom weaving in nearby Chanderi contributes to the district's wider economic profile.
The city has government and private schools affiliated to the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education and the CBSE, along with government colleges providing undergraduate education affiliated to universities of the state.
Hindi is the principal language of administration and education, with Bundeli widely spoken in everyday use. The population is religiously diverse, with a Hindu majority and significant Muslim and Jain communities; the Jain heritage is especially visible in pilgrimage sites scattered across the district.
