Agriculture is the principal economic activity, with crops such as wheat, soybean, gram, mustard and pulses dominating the cropping pattern.

Formation and administration

The district was created on 15 August 2003 by separating tehsils from Guna district. Administratively, the district is divided into several tehsils and community development blocks, with the principal towns being Ashoknagar, Mungaoli, Chanderi, Isagarh and Shadora.

Geography

The district shares boundaries with Guna, Shivpuri, Sagar and Lalitpur (in Uttar Pradesh), among others. The Betwa river system influences parts of the district, and rocky outcrops near Chanderi form a notable feature of the landscape.

History and heritage

The district contains the historic town of Chanderi, which is well known for its medieval forts, Jain temples, Bundela and Sultanate-era monuments, and the traditional Chanderi sari, a handloom textile that has received Geographical Indication (GI) recognition. Isagarh and Mungaoli also retain temples and old fortifications associated with the region's layered Rajput, Mughal, Maratha and princely-era past. Before independence, much of the present district lay within or adjoining the princely state of Gwalior under the Scindias.

Economy

The economy is predominantly agrarian. Soybean and wheat are the leading commercial crops, supported by gram and oilseeds. Handloom weaving at Chanderi is a major non-farm livelihood and a recognised craft cluster. Trade in agricultural produce is centred on the mandi towns of Ashoknagar and Mungaoli.

Transport

Ashoknagar is connected by the broad-gauge railway line of the West Central Railway, with Ashoknagar railway station lying on the Bina–Guna section. State highways link the district headquarters with Guna, Shivpuri, Sagar and Vidisha. The nearest major airports are at Gwalior and Bhopal.

Demographics

According to the 2011 Census of India, Ashoknagar district had a predominantly rural population, with Hindi as the principal language. The district also has speakers of Bundeli and Malvi dialects, reflecting its position at the meeting point of the Bundelkhand and Malwa cultural regions.
