The film follows Arjun Reddy Deshmukh, a brilliant but short-tempered house surgeon at St. Mary's Medical College, who falls in love with a junior student, Preethi Shetty. When her family forces her into an arranged marriage, Arjun spirals into substance abuse and reckless behaviour, jeopardising his medical career and personal relationships. The narrative traces his descent and his eventual attempt at reconciliation and recovery.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga, a former physiotherapist from Telangana, developed the screenplay over several years before making his directorial debut with the film. Principal photography was conducted in locations across Hyderabad, Mangalore, Dehradun, Mussoorie, New Delhi, and Italy. The film was made on a relatively modest budget compared to mainstream Telugu productions of the period.
The soundtrack was composed by Radhan, with the background score by Harshavardhan Rameshwar. Songs such as "Telisiney Na Nuvvey", "Madhuram", and "Emitemitemito" gained popularity. The audio rights were acquired by Aditya Music.
Arjun Reddy was released theatrically on 25 August 2017. Despite its A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification, the film became a commercial success and ran for an extended period in theatres across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Vijay Deverakonda's performance was widely praised and is regarded as a turning point in his career, establishing him as a leading actor in Telugu cinema.
Critical response was polarised. Reviewers praised the lead performances, the realism of the romance, and the technical craft, while others criticised the protagonist's depiction of toxic masculinity, glorification of substance abuse, and treatment of the female lead.
The film was remade in Hindi as Kabir Singh (2019), again directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, with Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani in the lead roles. A Tamil remake titled Adithya Varma (2019), directed by Gireesaaya, starred Dhruv Vikram in his debut. A Malayalam version with the same title was announced but did not progress to release.
Arjun Reddy is considered a watershed film in modern Telugu cinema for its raw narrative style, naturalistic dialogue, and willingness to explore an unsympathetic protagonist. It contributed to a wave of Telugu films that adopted realistic urban storytelling and influenced casting and writing trends in the subsequent years. The film also catalysed national-level debates on the portrayal of romance, consent, and male anger in Indian cinema.
