Amala Akkineni is an Indian actress, classical dancer, animal welfare activist, and educationist. She rose to prominence as a leading actress in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Malayalam cinema during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and later transitioned into roles in education and social work. She is associated with the Akkineni family, one of the most prominent film families in Telugu cinema.

Amala was born in 1967 in Kolkata. She trained extensively in Bharatanatyam under Kalakshetra in Chennai, where she studied classical dance during her formative years. Her dance training significantly shaped her stage presence and screen performances.
Amala began her film career in the late 1980s, debuting in Mani Ratnam's Tamil film Mouna Ragam (1986) in a brief role. She went on to become a popular lead actress across south Indian and Hindi cinema during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
She paired with Nagarjuna in films including Geetanjali and Shiva, and the two married in 1992. After her marriage, she largely withdrew from full-time acting to focus on family, education, and activism. She later returned to selective acting roles, appearing in films and on streaming platforms in supporting parts during the 2010s and 2020s.
Amala co-founded the Blue Cross of Hyderabad, an animal welfare organisation that runs a shelter and rescue programmes for stray and abandoned animals in the city. The organisation has been active in spaying and neutering programmes, animal rights advocacy, and emergency rescue. She has been associated with several other welfare initiatives and has supported environmental and animal rights campaigns over the years.
Amala serves as the Director of the Annapurna International School of Film and Media (AISFM) in Hyderabad, an institution founded by the Akkineni family that offers programmes in filmmaking, acting, cinematography, and allied media disciplines. Under her stewardship, the school has developed into one of the prominent film training institutes in southern India.
Amala married Nagarjuna Akkineni in 1992. The couple have a son, Akhil Akkineni, who is also an actor in Telugu cinema. Her stepson, Naga Chaitanya, from Nagarjuna's first marriage, is also an actor. The family resides in Hyderabad, Telangana.
Amala is regarded as one of the prominent leading actresses of south Indian cinema during the late 1980s. Beyond cinema, her sustained work in animal welfare through Blue Cross and her contributions to film education through AISFM mark her as a multifaceted public figure in Hyderabad's cultural and civic life.
